shipbuiling

so im wondering if we can build the boat at hod's house in his yard, and build a green screen behind it, and that way we dont have to light the set, since the sun will do it for us, plus we dont have to pay anyone for the space.
we might still have to light the green screen.
and we will have to tarp the boat to keep the moisture off of it.
sound good?

  1. Chroma key backdrop: Relatively easy
    BOAT: HARD.

Well, unless it's a really shitty boat. 2-D boat, i.e. painted plywood cutout?

  2. this sounds good to me and my yard. lets do it. my neighbor has a crazy amount of old random farm artifacts that might be perfect ship components... if he lets us exploit his stuff that is

  3. while i agree that building a boat is the most challenging part of this production, i know we can do it.
i have some plans in my mind for it's construction, and we can dress it with a lot of painted cardboard.
    its going to look great!
how many of us were on the setbuilding crew at harbor high?
    many.
how many carpenters do we know in santa cruz?(who are willing to work for free)
    at least 4.
personally i am stoked to not have to find an indoor space to shoot these scenes and to not have to light a ship and try to make it look like it's "outside".

  4. Harbor high set building co-crew chief Hod Hulphers says: outside is best forsure. set some post, raise vertical backdrop, build some kind of platform as deck. we have plenty of skill at hand, and it will look good.

  5. is there any way to get a HUGE pole for the mast?
i should be about 15 feet long.
i guess we could use a long board and cover it , but a tree would be better.

  6. The tricky thing we'll want to figure out in advance is shooting outdoors with green screen / chroma key. You've got the sun to worry about; a shadow can be cast against the screen, and screw things up.

It looks like a 10'x20' sheet of green muslin is 50 bux.

  7. we are going to need like a 40 X 20 piece of green muslin.
the sun / shadow issue will be a challenge.
can we light the screen really hot and erase the effect of the lack of sun?
or if not, we can just shoot at certain times when the shadow isnt happening.
i think we only need a couple days on the boat.
but if we build it, we might want to use it a lot.

  8. if we were to shoot before noon i think we could avoid the shadow prob. the sun on the property has to breach a huge grove of redwoods and eucalyptus before it hits us, that would mean we'd build the facade facing west. this all assuming that muslin isn't adversly affected by being back lit, and that the summer suns hours are as i remember them
