Songs....Revisited!

So I was just doing dishes and thinking about the question Joel posed earlier. How do we divvy up the song writing chores for the film? It seems like everyone has some great ideas for songs, and we're going to wind up with more songs than we can possibly use. I thought it might be useful to fully list all the scenes that have musical numbers in them, and what the general idea for the song is:

1. Opening Number. Johnny is strolling around the village, interacting with the populous. Should be a real joyous, upbeat number. Possibly full of bragging about how well loved he is.

2. Johnny and his Dad. I think this song is just a "maybe" right now. After Johnny and his papa have a real heart to heart about Johnny's history and the Memphis Edge Johnny sings a little lullaby to his dad.

3. The adventure begins! Johnny and the crew sing a song while getting ready to set sail. Is it upbeat and full of the possibility of great deeds, or is it a sad number, full of homesickness for the place they are leaving? Maybe both? You make the call.

4. Mermen and Mermaids. Johnny sings a song to win them over. What kind of song would Mermen be into?

5. Night on the ship. Johnny is feeling pretty good about his quest, and sleeping out under the stars. So of course he sings about it.

6. "It's A Mighty Long Way From Here To Home" The crews spirits sagging, Johnny sings a real raucous number to get them pumped. Probably the biggest musical production outside of the opening.

7. Johnny and the Amazons. Johnny gets the Amazons drunk and they dance while he plays a tune.

8. "Love Me Gentle". A real heart breaker that plays over the end of the film.

So that's it. I think the fairest thing to do is for everyone to write as many songs as they want, and do kinda rough demos. Then we can all vote on which ones we want to use in the film. As a consolation prize all the others can go on the soundtrack.

Ideally, we get together after we pick the ones for the film and record them with the band. I think the band recordings will probably have a nicer feel than everyone working alone. Plus then everybody can contribute.

What do you dudes think? Sound fair?

  1. Although Democratus might have been unhappy with this suggestion, I propose that Joel get the final say.

    Otherwise sounds reasonable.

  2. this idea sounds great.
i know al has already written an opening number,
hod has written one about mermen, and one about being a king or something.
but why should they have all the fun?

  3. sounds fare to me jay. i love the idea of the band recording the chosen songs together. we're really evolving. hope there's no hurt feelings. the song about the king is johnny dreaming about being more than a normal guy before he knows he's the son of zeus. maybe i'll stick to the program a little more

  4. Where should we post these songs? Or submit them to one person to compile, or whatever?

  5. Good question. How about everyone sends them to me, and then I'll post them online somewhere?

  6. have you guys ever seen Elvis perform 'Fever?' every verse or so, the drummer doubles or even triples down on the kick, and Elvis shakes his hips to it, and every time he shakes his hips, the ladies go wild. good stuff.
